Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.

Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns

Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
