EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
