Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Police then found multiple other smeared cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state early analysis show the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; authorities are not yet aware of any harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for tips.
A high-ranking political figure said the incident made him stunned and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
