The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?
Was the team's progress falling apart, or did there exist a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the club had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were facing for financial irregularities. Speculation that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic on the pitch as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other first five games, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it's been difficult to ascertain if they're getting better or imploding.
The Youngster's Unforeseen Presence
At least one man remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this year. He completed the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, early this summer, Lazio were advocating for him to extend his stay temporarily. The registration embargo forced a rethink. They were unable to thin their squad lacking backup options.
He joined originally when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. Finding His True Position
It's possible the coach was persistently working to determine the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9.
